Rujin He | Young Mezzo-Soprano and Vocal Educator Based in Japan
Born in Turpan, Xinjiang, Rujin He combines a professional music education in China, advanced vocal studies in Japan, and international training experience in Europe. In recent years, she has performed extensively in Japan, China, and Europe, and is regarded as a highly accomplished young artist with strong potential among the new generation of Chinese vocalists based in Japan.
He received her bachelor’s degree from the Department of Vocal Music and Opera at the Shenyang Conservatory of Music, where she studied under Professor Xu Zhaoren. During her undergraduate years, she received systematic training in bel canto and operatic performance. She was also selected for a Ministry of Education program dedicated to cultivating high-level cultural and artistic talent from Xinjiang and achieved distinguished results in professional competitions and showcases, including the National Vocal and Opera Performance Showcase for Arts Institutions. Nourished from an early age by the local musical culture of Xinjiang, she developed an artistic foundation that combines conservatory-based bel canto training with the distinctive musical character of China’s western regions.
After completing her undergraduate studies, He moved to Japan to continue her education and has since pursued vocal studies, performance, and artistic exchange there for many years. Her stage activities have taken her to Tokyo, Nagoya, Kyoto, Fukuoka, and other cities across Japan. She has received professional guidance from numerous Japanese and European vocalists, opera coaches, and conductors. She has also studied for many years with Professor Wang Xianlin, a renowned tenor and former professor in the Department of Vocal Music at the Central Conservatory of Music, and has appeared with him in concert on several occasions. These experiences have further strengthened her abilities in vocal technique, stage performance, and the interpretation of both Chinese and international repertoire.
He places great importance on the study and interpretation of multilingual vocal repertoire. Her repertoire includes works in Italian, German, French, Russian, Japanese, and Chinese. She performs Western operatic arias, German and Austrian Lieder, and excerpts from Russian operas, while also excelling in Chinese art songs, Xinjiang folk songs, and Japanese art songs. Her work demonstrates strong linguistic adaptability and a refined ability to communicate across cultures through music.
In recent years, He has achieved a number of significant results in professional competitions. In 2026, she won First Prize at the 45th Iizuka Newcomer Music Competition and also received the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Award, the Asahi Shimbun Award, the Iizuka Mayor’s Award, and financial support for overseas study. The Iizuka Newcomer Music Competition is one of Japan’s long-established and influential classical music competitions for emerging artists, and her success there reflects the high level of professional recognition she has earned on Japan’s classical vocal stage. In the competition, she performed Wagner’s Wesendonck Lieder and an excerpt from Tchaikovsky’s opera The Maid of Orleans, demonstrating her command of both German art song and Russian operatic repertoire. She was also admitted through audition to Nikikai, one of Japan’s leading organizations for classical vocalists and opera singers, and became a full member.
In international competitions in Europe and Asia, He won Third Prize in the Young Artist Division of the 3rd Gut Immling International Vocal Competition in Germany, as well as a special award for Best Performance of a Chinese Song. She was a finalist in the Bogdan International Opera Competition in Poland and won First Prize in both the Art Song Division and the Opera Aria Division of the Chuncheon International Vocal Competition in South Korea. In China, she received awards for opera arias and art songs at the 8th National Vocal and Opera Performance Showcase for Arts Institutions and also achieved distinguished results in the National French Art Song Competition. These experiences demonstrate her well-rounded professional ability in opera, art song, and multilingual vocal repertoire.
A mezzo-soprano, He possesses a rich, warm voice with strong support in the middle and lower registers and a refined capacity for emotional expression. Her singing combines the depth and stability of the mezzo-soprano voice with the agility and freshness of a young artist. She moves naturally between Western opera, Chinese art songs, Xinjiang folk songs, and Japanese art songs. Her stage presence is poised and graceful, and her musical expression is delicate and sincere. She is particularly skilled at shaping the emotional atmosphere of a work through subtle gradations of tone and the expressive color of language.
He has presented solo recitals in a number of Japanese cities. In 2023, she gave a recital entitled An Evening of Japan–China Musical Exchange at Ginza Oji Hall in Tokyo, with Professor Wang Xianlin appearing as a special guest artist. In 2024, she presented a solo recital at the Denki Bunka Kaikan in Nagoya. In 2026, she performed a special cherry blossom season concert at the Kyoto Prefectural Citizens’ Hall ALTI, featuring vocal works from Italy, Germany, Russia, Japan, China, and other countries. The program demonstrated the breadth of her repertoire and her confident command of the concert stage. That same year, she also appeared as a prizewinner in a concert associated with the Iizuka Newcomer Music Competition.
In addition to her solo recitals, He has long participated in Chinese cultural events, China–Japan friendship concerts, Spring Festival celebrations, National Day commemorations, and performances organized by overseas Chinese communities throughout Japan. She has been invited to participate in cultural events associated with the Consulate-General of China in Nagoya, the All-Japan Federation of Overseas Chinese Associations, and the Japan Federation of Chinese Literary and Art Circles. She has also appeared frequently alongside Chinese vocalists based in Japan, including Jinzhong Bao and Zizhen Liu. Through these activities, she actively promotes Chinese vocal works, Chinese-language songs, and the regional musical culture of Xinjiang in Japan.
One of He’s defining artistic qualities is her ability to combine Western bel canto technique with the expressive traditions of Chinese repertoire. As a young singer from Turpan, Xinjiang, she brings vivid regional color and a distinctive ethnic musical character to works such as The Tarim River and A Cup of Fine Wine. In Chinese songs such as I Love You, China and Clouds of My Homeland, she conveys the emotional identification of an overseas Chinese artist with the culture of her homeland and with Chinese-language music. At the same time, she has accumulated extensive experience in studying and performing Japanese art songs and is able to connect with Japanese audiences through sensitive diction and nuanced musical expression.
In the field of vocal education, He offers both online and in-person instruction to Chinese international students in Japan, vocal enthusiasts, local Japanese students, and young learners. Her teaching draws on the systematic training she received at a Chinese conservatory, her experience of vocal study in Japan, and the results of her international professional development. She emphasizes healthy vocal production, balanced breath support, coordination across vocal registers, multilingual diction, and stage performance. Her goal is to cultivate singers who possess both Chinese–Japanese bilingual abilities and an international outlook.
As an important young artistic member of the Tokyo International Vocal Society, He brings the professional vitality of a new generation of Chinese vocalists based in Japan. Her experience in international competitions, solo recitals, multilingual operatic repertoire, Chinese art songs, and Chinese cultural outreach will help TIVS further advance the development of young vocal talent, the promotion of Chinese musical culture, and international vocal exchange.
Overall, Rujin He is a young Chinese mezzo-soprano based in Japan whose career combines rigorous professional training, international competition experience, multilingual performance ability, and a strong awareness of cultural communication.
