Zizhen Liu | Chinese Lyric Tenor, Choral Conductor, and Vocal Educator Based in Japan

Zizhen Liu is a Chinese lyric tenor, choral conductor, and vocal educator based in Japan. Originally from Dalian, Liaoning Province, he now resides in Tokyo. He has long been active on Chinese vocal stages in Japan, in cultural activities within the overseas Chinese community, and in people-to-people musical exchange between China and Japan. He is one of the representative young Chinese musicians in Japan whose work encompasses solo performance, choral conducting, vocal instruction, and event organization.

Liu graduated with a bachelor’s degree from the Department of Vocal Music at the Shenyang Conservatory of Music. While still a student, he demonstrated strong professional ability and stage presence, performing at the Liaoning Television Spring Festival Gala and receiving distinguished results in several professional vocal competitions. In 2015, he moved to Japan for further study. He spent two years undertaking vocal studies at Tokyo University of the Arts and later completed a master’s program in vocal music at Senzoku Gakuen College of Music. His systematic studies included Italian bel canto, Japanese art song, choral conducting, and stage performance, giving him a solid and versatile musical foundation.

In professional competitions, Liu received the Silver Award at the Luyi Cup National Vocal Competition and the Gold Award in the Male Vocal Quartet Division of the 7th National China–Japan Song Competition. His repertoire includes Chinese art songs, Japanese art songs, Western operatic arias, and choral works. He has particular expertise in bilingual Chinese–Japanese vocal expression, the training of Chinese choirs, and stage presentation.

Since establishing his career in Japan, Liu has devoted himself to promoting vocal music and developing choral activities within the Chinese community. He founded Huayin – Journey of Voices Mixed Choir and serves as its founder, director, and permanent conductor. The ensemble is one of the more active Chinese mixed choirs in the Tokyo area and regularly participates in Chinese community festivals, dedicated concerts, and multicultural exchange events. It provides Chinese music enthusiasts in Japan with a stable and professionally guided environment for choral study and stage experience.

Liu has also served for many years as vocal instructor and conductor of the choir affiliated with a Chinese women’s exchange association in Japan. Since 2016, he has been responsible for foundational vocal training, rehearsals of Chinese and Japanese repertoire, and guidance in stage presentation. He has repeatedly led the choir in major cultural events associated with the All-Japan Federation of Overseas Chinese Associations, the China Festival in Tokyo, and the Yokohama Overseas Chinese Choral Festival. In his long-term work as a choral teacher and conductor, he emphasizes not only vocal technique, but also teamwork, linguistic expression, understanding of repertoire, and overall stage impact.

Liu has frequently been invited to appear in major cultural performances within the Chinese community in Japan. At the commemorative gala marking the 50th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between China and Japan, organized by the All-Japan Federation of Overseas Chinese Associations, he appeared as a principal soloist alongside Chinese tenor Jinzhong Bao. Their innovative staging and expressive vocal performances contributed greatly to the success of the event. He has also been a regular performer at the Federation’s annual Spring Festival Gala and at Chinese vocal concerts in Tokyo, including Autumn Love, Sentiments of the Wind. His repertoire has included Motherland, My Kind Mother, Subaru, operatic excerpts by Puccini and Verdi, and Chinese and Japanese art songs. His performances have been warmly received by Chinese audiences and music lovers in Japan.

In addition to performing, Liu is actively involved in vocal education and music teaching materials. He participated in the vocal editing and adaptation of lyrics and melodies for Kawai Musical Instruments’ Chinese-language music materials for young learners. He also operates his own vocal studio, teaching both Chinese and Japanese students. His students include applicants preparing for music-school entrance examinations, adult classical-singing learners, and middle-aged and senior choral enthusiasts. His teaching style is warm and attentive, with an emphasis on integrating healthy vocal production, clear language, and genuine musical expression.

Liu has also served for several consecutive years as a professional judge for the Tokyo Division of the “Culture of China · Water Cube Cup” Chinese Song Contest. Working alongside Qianyi Qin and other professional vocalists based in Japan, he has contributed to contestant evaluation and artistic coaching and has become a respected and consistently influential adjudicator in Tokyo’s Chinese-language vocal competitions.

A lyric tenor, Liu possesses a bright, clear, gentle, and refined voice. He is skilled at conveying the meaning of a work through naturally flowing breath and nuanced emotional interpretation. He is equally capable of expressing the subtle poetic qualities of Chinese and Japanese art songs and performing lighter operatic arias and solo passages in large-scale choral works. Rooted in classical vocal technique, his artistic direction integrates Chinese songs, Japanese repertoire, and Western classics, reflecting the distinctive cross-cultural character of a Chinese musician based in Japan.

For many years, Liu has served the cultural and artistic life of the Chinese community in Japan in his multiple roles as soloist, choral conductor, vocal teacher, and organizer of community cultural events. His musical activities and educational work have been featured by Chinese-language media in Japan and China, including The Chinese Review Weekly, The Japan Overseas Chinese News, 华人头条, China News Service’s overseas Chinese platform, and Japan Baiyou Network.

As Vice President of the Tokyo International Vocal Society, Liu brings extensive experience in vocal performance, choral conducting, Chinese community organization, youth music education, and musical exchange between China and Japan. He will provide important support for the Society’s arts festivals, vocal workshops, choral projects, and Chinese-language arts education programs. His participation will help TIVS strengthen its connections with Chinese musical communities in Japan and further promote the dissemination and development of Chinese-language songs, Chinese vocal works, and choral music in Japan.
