Zeyong Zhang | Bass-Baritone and Vocal Educator
Zeyong Zhang is a distinguished bass-baritone and vocal educator, Professor in the Department of Vocal Music and Opera at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, and a supervisor of master’s degree students. He has long been active in vocal performance, opera, and professional vocal education, and is a highly experienced expert with profound artistic accomplishment in the field of classical vocal training in China.
Professor Zhang graduated from the Vocal Music Department of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music and later pursued advanced studies in Japan, completing the Opera Studies Program at Tokyo College of Music. Throughout his extensive artistic studies and stage career, he received systematic training in both Chinese and international approaches to vocal education. In particular, he studied with Professor A. Pola, an authoritative teacher of the Italian bel canto tradition and mentor of the world-renowned tenor Luciano Pavarotti, gaining an in-depth understanding of authentic Italian bel canto technique. His singing is firmly grounded in the academic tradition, with a solid command of vocal timbre, breath control, vocal function, and musical expression. He received high praise from his mentor for the purity, discipline, and artistic expressiveness of his bel canto singing.
As an artist who combines an international perspective with extensive practical experience in Chinese vocal education, Professor Zhang has accumulated a wealth of experience on both the operatic and concert stages. He has performed major roles in such classic operas as The Magic Flute, The Marriage of Figaro, La Traviata, and La Bohème. He has also organized and appeared in numerous faculty-and-student concerts, vocal demonstration performances, art-song recitals, and intercollegiate exchange concerts. His repertoire encompasses Western operatic arias, German and Austrian Lieder, Chinese art songs, traditional and folk music, and classic Chinese revolutionary vocal works, reflecting the breadth and depth of his artistry.
In the field of education, Professor Zhang has taught for many years in the Department of Vocal Music and Opera at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, where he is responsible for training undergraduate and graduate students specializing in classical singing. Over the years, he has nurtured numerous outstanding vocal talents who now work and study at music institutions, professional performing arts organizations, and arts education institutions in China and abroad. As a supervisor of master’s degree students, he emphasizes not only vocal technique, but also the comprehensive development of artistic cultivation, linguistic expression, stage characterization, and cultural understanding. He has made important contributions to the advancement of classical vocal education in China and to the development of young singers.
In addition to his work at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, Professor Zhang has taught in its Department of Continuing Education and served as a choral instructor at the Zhou Xiaoyan Opera Center, where he has long been involved in the training of opera performers and in practical vocal education. He currently also serves as a visiting professor at Yunnan Arts University and is frequently invited to present vocal masterclasses, public lectures, and artistic coaching sessions throughout China. Through these activities, he promotes the principles of authentic bel canto training and shares rigorous, scientific, and systematic methods of vocal instruction.
Professor Zhang’s artistic career is distinguished by excellence in performance, depth in education, and a strong sense of cultural responsibility. He is both a bass-baritone firmly rooted in the international bel canto tradition and a senior vocal educator who has devoted many years to the front line of professional music education in China.
